Support for New Hartford volunteer firefighters

The law creates a nonprofit to help indigent, disabled, or injured New Hartford volunteer firefighters and their families. It also supports member welfare, safety, facilities, morale, and social activities. Current or former active volunteers who qualify as exempt firefighters through department service can join; paid firefighters cannot. People removed for cause, expelled, or dropped without reinstatement are excluded. Membership ends when someone leaves active volunteer service before completing five years. Starting with taxes due on premiums received on or after January 1, 2027, the association receives fire insurance tax proceeds tied to property in its service area, including a share based on insurance business written there. It must use the money only for its stated purposes, and the law does not change tax rates. The association must get written government approval before opening or running a home or institution that requires it.
