Beginning November 1, 2026, teacher education programs cannot be accredited unless they offer alternative placement in at least four specializations, including math, science, and a foreign language. Programs must admit people who meet the state criteria and offer ways to finish standard certification during the summers before and after the first teaching year. Two or more Oklahoma colleges may work together to meet these requirements.
Beginning November 1, 2026, you can enter teaching through an alternative placement certificate if you have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.50 GPA, a terminal degree, or a bachelor’s plus related work experience, and you show subject competency or have a major in the field. You must pass the subject‑area exam, but the State Board may waive it if you hold an accredited advanced degree that matches the test content. The Board may also grant other exceptions based on demonstrated subject competency. You must plan to earn standard certification within three years, with 6 to 18 semester hours (90 to 270 clock hours) of professional education set by the Board. Student teaching and pre‑student‑teaching field experience are not required for this route. To get the certificate, you must show a job offer from an accredited Oklahoma district in your subject or declare you will seek one; the certificate counts for hiring and gives you inductee status.
Beginning November 1, 2026, enrollees in the alternative placement route must not have been denied entry to an approved teacher program or failed required courses, unless they already hold a certificate. You must file a plan to finish standard certification within three years and complete the induction program with the same duties as other inductees. An alternative placement certificate can be renewed for up to three more years if you show a same‑subject job offer from an accredited Oklahoma district and a letter from a teacher education institution showing satisfactory progress.
Starting with the 2027–2028 school year, adjunct teachers cannot teach core subjects in pre‑K through 5th grade. Districts can ask for a waiver to keep an adjunct in that role if the person taught before 2027–2028 and completes the State’s science‑of‑reading training. Also starting in 2027–2028, districts cannot employ an adjunct for more than five years unless the State Board approves a waiver. A Board‑approved waiver can extend adjunct employment for up to five more years and must include the person’s distinguished qualifications.
Beginning November 1, 2026, districts may hire adjunct teachers who have at least a high school diploma and distinguished qualifications set by State Board rules. Adjuncts do not have to meet standard certification. If an adjunct does not hold a valid teaching certificate, the person is not legally classified as a “teacher” under state law, which can affect rights and protections tied to that status.
