Beginning November 1, 2026, the Executive Director is chosen for knowledge, training, experience, and ability. The Commission sets the Director’s salary under Section 3601.2. The Director serves at the Commission’s pleasure and may be removed without cause.
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Governor names a chair, vice chair, and secretary from the Commission. The Commission must adopt rules under the Administrative Procedures Act. It may meet monthly and must meet at least quarterly; the chair or any three members can call a special meeting. All meetings follow the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act. A quorum is five members, and actions need a majority of those present. The Commission is a state agency and can sue and be sued, adopt a seal and bylaws, hire staff and set pay, make contracts, and adopt needed rules and policies.
Effective January 14, 2019, all non-advisory powers of the Commission move to the Executive Director. Beginning November 1, 2026, the Commission serves as an advisory body to the Director. The Commission has eight members, and each serves a six-year term.
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Lieutenant Governor is an ex officio voting member. Appointed members must have experience in fields like hospitality, tourism promotion, outdoor recreation, marketing, or finance. One member comes from each congressional district and must live there; other members are at large. No more than one member may come from the same county. If districts change, current members finish their terms, and new appointments follow the new map. The Governor appoints members with Senate consent, and they serve at the Governor’s pleasure until a successor is qualified. Members cannot run for federal, state, or county office while serving (the ex officio member is excluded). Members must take and file the state oaths before serving and are reimbursed for travel under the State Travel Reimbursement Act.
