Beginning November 1, 2026, the Commissioner of Public Safety, with the Senate leader or House Speaker, can commission up to two members from each chamber’s security team as state peace officers. Each commissioned officer must be certified as a full-time peace officer. These officers have the same arrest, search, and law-enforcement powers as other state officers and can serve civil papers. Their authority is limited to the Capitol building, grounds, and parking lots, and only while on official duty.
The Commissioner of Public Safety sets the rules for these commissions. The Commissioner can limit their scope and can suspend or revoke a commission for any reason. A commission ends if the officer leaves service or moves off the security team. These officers are not employees or agents of the Department of Public Safety, and the Department is not liable for their actions.
