Beginning November 1, 2026, anyone approved as an alternate caregiver must pass background checks and a home review. Every adult in the alternate caregiver’s home must also pass these checks. Checks include an Oklahoma criminal name search, DHS child welfare records, state worker and care registries, a home evaluation, and any other requirements set by rule.
Beginning November 1, 2026, foster parents may use alternate caregivers, respite care, or informal care for children in the Department of Human Services (DHS) custody. Informal care can last up to 72 hours; any care over 72 hours must be by a DHS‑approved alternate caregiver or an approved respite family. An alternate caregiver may cover care for up to 14 straight days and only in traditional, contracted, or kinship foster care. Foster parents must name 1–2 DHS‑approved alternate caregivers, and approvals are family‑specific. Foster parents must tell DHS before using any of these options. Use the reasonable and prudent parent standard for informal caregivers and avoid anyone DHS has found unsafe. Only DHS‑approved foster families may provide respite care, and they may serve more than one family. DHS will set detailed rules and procedures.
