New crimes for gift card fraud

Beginning November 1, 2026, Oklahoma criminal law covers gift cards and gift certificates. It is larceny to knowingly take or keep a card or its redemption information without consent. Altering a card, certificate, or its packaging is third-degree forgery. Using lies or false promises to get redemption information is fraud. Using a card or redemption information obtained unlawfully to get money, goods, or services is larceny. If the value taken tops $950 in any consecutive six-month period, it is grand larceny.

What counts as a gift card

Beginning November 1, 2026, the law defines key terms for gift-card crimes. It explains who a cardholder is and who counts as an issuer. It spells out what a gift card and a gift certificate are. It defines redemption information and how value is measured. These terms tell police, merchants, and buyers what the rules cover.
