Court penalties for underage tobacco violations
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee’s general sessions or juvenile courts may impose penalties for underage tobacco and vapor product violations. Options include up to 50 hours of community service, completion of a court program, or a $10–$50 civil penalty. The penalty may be charged directly to people ages 18–20, or to a minor’s parent, guardian, or custodian. For minors, courts may order a 90-day informal adjustment. For a minor’s second or later violation, courts may order up to six months of probation, plus community service and completion of a court program about tobacco and vapor dangers. The Department of Children’s Services cannot supervise this probation.
