Higher local fines for repeat violators
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee municipalities, including home rule cities, and metropolitan governments can adopt tiered fines for repeat violations. Higher fines require repeated violations of the same local ordinance by the same person or entity within 12 months. Local governments must adopt the system by ordinance; higher fines are not automatic. Existing penalty limits still apply, and the law sets no specific fine amounts. The law applies only to acts or failures to act on or after July 1, 2026.
