Harsher penalties for fatal hit-and-run drivers

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee applies these penalties to offenses committed on or after that date. Failing to stop or follow crash-scene requirements is a Class E felony when the person knew or reasonably should have known the crash caused a death. The person must serve at least one year in confinement and serve 100% of the sentence. The required fine is $5,000 to $10,000. These penalties are in addition to any other punishment imposed for the violation.
