Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee schools must give their harassment policies to every school employee, as well as each student. Teachers and school employees found to have committed harassment, intimidation, bullying, or cyberbullying are subject to suspension or dismissal. The law also adds these acts to the state teacher-misconduct list when they violate the district’s policy. The misconduct changes apply to acts committed on or after July 1, 2026.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee’s revised bullying rules cover acts committed on or after that date by students or school employees. Employees include school and local education agency workers; victims are students, including another student when a student commits the act. Bullying must substantially interfere with a student’s educational benefits, opportunities, or performance. On school grounds, at school events, on school-provided equipment or transportation, or at official bus stops, additional tests apply: the act must cause physical harm or property damage, or knowingly place the student in reasonable fear of either. Acts off school property or outside school-sponsored activities must target specific students and substantially disrupt the school environment or learning.
