Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee license station staff must ask applicants whether they want a REAL ID or non-REAL ID. This covers in-person applications and renewals for driver licenses, photo ID licenses, and learner’s permits. Staff must provide a printed document explaining each option’s required documents, allowed uses, and built-in electronic technology. Applicants must sign it, check a box for their choice, and confirm they received the document. Staff must complete processing of a non-REAL ID application when an applicant declines REAL ID. This procedure does not apply to renewals of existing REAL ID driver licenses. The department’s website must prominently state that REAL ID is optional.
