Felony penalties for urging imminent suicide

Tennessee creates a Class D felony called coercive suicide. It covers intentionally advising or encouraging someone to commit or attempt suicide, with the aim of urging, persuading, or helping them do so very soon. The person giving that advice or encouragement must know the other person has communicated an intent to die by suicide. The law applies to acts committed on or after July 1, 2026.
