Private-school students gain public-school sports access

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee school districts must let qualifying private-school students try out for public middle or high school sports. This applies to the 2026–2027 school year and every school year after that. Students must live in the district and use the public school they are zoned to attend. Their private school must not belong to the sports association that regulates competition. It must have fewer than 200 students in the applicable grade span: grades 6–8 or grades 9–12. When the public school belongs to a sports association, students must meet its eligibility rules. They can join only sports programs their private school does not offer. Access also applies at zoned public schools that compete without belonging to a sports association. Sports associations keep their authority over eligibility rules, and coaches and school officials still choose team members. The law guarantees access to tryouts, not a team spot.
