Academy staff can become law enforcement officers

Effective upon becoming law, Tennessee’s general services commissioner can appoint academy directors and staff as law enforcement officers. The academy must be under the commissioner’s general supervision. Staff members need the academy director’s written recommendation. Appointees must meet Tennessee Code § 8-8-101 requirements and take the oath required by § 8-18-111.

Law enforcement academies gain sales and fees

Effective upon becoming law, Tennessee’s Department of General Services can operate sales facilities at law enforcement academies under its commissioner’s supervision. Academies can sell goods supporting education or operations, plus promotional items. The department can charge reasonable fees for services, programs, lodging, meals, facility use, teaching materials, equipment, and related operations. Collected fees must enter a designated fund used only to run, maintain, or improve the academy. The law sets no fee amounts or sales prices.
