Schools must teach history of communism

Tennessee public and charter schools must teach the history of communism. Lessons must fit each age and grade and cover set topics. Topics include U.S. movements and tactics, atrocities under communist regimes, and how these ideologies compare with U.S. founding principles. They also include 20th century threats like China's Cultural Revolution, events before revolutions, and Cuba and Latin America. The Department of Education develops guidance and may ask victims and victim groups for input. Guidance work starts now. Teaching starts July 1, 2026, for the 2026–2027 school year and after.
