Tennessee students get new communism history standards

The law took effect upon becoming law; its requirements apply at Tennessee’s next adoption of social studies standards. The standards recommendation committee must recommend grade-appropriate communism history standards, and the State Board of Education must adopt them. Required topics include U.S. communist history, domestic movements and their tactics, and atrocities under communism abroad. Standards must compare ideologies, including communism and totalitarianism, that conflict with America’s founding principles of freedom and democracy. They must cover growing communist threats to the United States and its allies during the twentieth century. This includes China’s Cultural Revolution and other mass killings by communist regimes. Standards must also cover economic, industrial, and political events leading up to communist revolutions. Finally, they must cover Cuba’s communist policies, its Communist Party’s roots, and communist ideas and guerrilla forces across Latin America.
