Tennessee hygienists can offer more care

Beginning January 1, 2027, Tennessee dental hygienists can take diagnostic X-rays, assess and record tooth and soft-tissue data, clean teeth, and apply fluoride before a dentist sees the patient. New patients require the dentist’s direct supervision; existing patients require general supervision. Also beginning January 1, 2027, hygienists can prescribe fluoride agents, topical oral anesthetics, silver diamine fluoride, Curodont, sealants, and desiccation therapy. This prescribing authority excludes controlled substances under state or federal law and items requiring a federal Drug Enforcement Administration license. Effective upon enactment, the law requires the Tennessee Board of Dentistry to set education and training rules for prescribing, including a course on placing silver diamine fluoride.
