Longer service for after-school buses

Tennessee allows longer service for buses used only to carry students from school to an after-school program. These buses can run until the later of 20 years from their in-service date or 300,000 recorded miles. After that point, they can finish the current school year while meeting all safety and operating requirements. Owners must then stop using or replace them. Owners must notify the Department of Safety in writing by certified mail when either threshold is reached. Buses in service more than 15 years require inspections at least twice yearly by the safety commissioner or their designee. The law took effect upon becoming law.
