Buses used only for after-school trips can run until the later of 20 years or 300,000 miles. If it hits that limit mid-year, the owner can use it through year-end, then must stop or replace it. The bus must meet all safety and operation rules during that time. The owner must notify the Tennessee Department of Safety by certified mail when it reaches 20 years or 300,000 miles. Buses over 15 years old used under this rule must be inspected by the Commissioner or designee at least twice a year. The law takes effect when it becomes law.
