These rules cover replacement exterior metal or plastic parts, including inner and outer panels—not mechanical parts. Beginning May 6, 2026, insurers must give written notice before specifying parts not made for or by the vehicle’s manufacturer. When insurers approve or specify these parts, the written estimate must identify each one. A disclosure on or attached to the insured’s estimate must explain the insurer’s authorization and use of another maker’s parts. It must also identify the part maker or distributor—not the vehicle maker—as the warranty provider. For policies issued on or after October 1, 2026, insurers must also provide written notices at issuance and renewal. These policy notices may be electronic and explain that aftermarket parts may be used for covered losses without changing policy coverage or duties. Both policy and estimate disclosures require at least 10-point type and state that the parts must match the originals in kind and quality, including fit and performance.
Beginning May 6, 2026, repair shops and installers no longer must give advance written notice before installing non-original aftermarket parts. Utah’s Insurance Department and insurance commissioner also are not required to administer or enforce the repair-estimate disclosure rules. The estimate disclosures remain required; the law does not ban state enforcement.
Beginning May 6, 2026, insurers need not cover replacement crash parts made for or by the vehicle’s original manufacturer unless the policy expressly provides coverage. The law does not create or expand an insurer warranty beyond the policy’s terms. Voluntary use of these original-manufacturer parts remains allowed.
