New digital skills standards for middle-schoolers

The law takes effect May 6, 2026. Starting in the 2027–2028 school year, Utah's education board must set digital skills course standards for grades 7 or 8. Topics cover basic digital skills, online safety and ethics, social media and mental health, artificial intelligence, privacy, and cybersecurity. They also cover checking information, digital citizenship and communication, content creation, media literacy, and economic and career impacts. School districts and charter schools are not required to offer the course.

Schools lose committee-set technology grant rules

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah's education board no longer must maintain an advisory committee for digital teaching and learning grants. The law removes that committee's role in recommending program and school plan requirements and reporting to the board. School districts and charter schools no longer face plan requirements set by that committee. This change does not set new grant amounts or change household eligibility.
