Utah schools set serious-offense safety policies
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah school agencies must adopt response policies for students arrested, charged, or adjudicated in court for serious offenses or sexual crimes. Policies must address hazing and set different procedures for incidents on and off school property. When a student has committed such an offense, policies must provide for school resource officer input on safe school return. They must also set a process to tell school resource officers when a student is on probation. Policies must set steps for deciding alternative placement when the student shares a school with the victim or someone with a protective order against the student. The policies must follow state and federal law; this law provides no new funding.
