Less paperwork for Utah gun purchases

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah licensed gun dealers no longer need buyers’ written consent on a state bureau form. Dealers also no longer need to send that form’s information to the Bureau of Criminal Identification. Dealers still need bureau approval before selling or transferring a firearm. The dealer background-check requirement does not apply to sales to federally licensed firearms dealers.

Utah keeps gun buyers’ records longer

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah’s Bureau of Criminal Identification may keep approved buyers’ background-check records for up to 30 days. The previous limit was 20 days, measured from the dealer’s request. This applies when the bureau finds no state or federal ban on the person buying, possessing, or transferring firearms. The bureau must still keep a separate request log for 12 months. That log includes the dealer’s federal license number, transaction number, and transaction date.
