New graduation rules and flexible school schedules

Beginning July 1, 2026, Utah’s education board must set graduation credit requirements for qualifying programs in grades 9–12. These replace graduation requirements based on school days or instructional hours, with at least 83 class hours per credit. Qualifying programs must track attendance at scheduled in-person or virtual classes and provide direct teacher instruction and interaction. The board must also allow elementary, middle, and junior high schools to adjust school days or equivalent instructional hours. This flexibility lets them align schedules with high schools using the new credit rules.
