Study donors get unused funds back

The Huntsman Mental Health Institute must return unused study gifts, grants, and donations to donors by July 1, 2032. This rule takes effect May 6, 2026. Only money received for the study that remains unused must be returned; the law sets no refund amount.

New psychedelic therapy study for veterans

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah law establishes a study of psychedelic-assisted therapy at the University of Utah’s Huntsman Mental Health Institute. The study tests safety and feasibility, not guaranteed treatment benefits. Eligible veterans must have diagnosed PTSD and a documented poor response to at least one evidence-based PTSD treatment. The Institute must start by January 1, 2027, if funding reaches the amount it determines is enough; otherwise, it must start when funding reaches that amount. Legislative funding, gifts, grants, and donations support the study, and donations and study funding can continue after January 1, 2027. Before starting, the Institute must meet federal drug research rules, obtain required controlled-substance registrations, and secure research ethics board approval. Treatment uses an FDA-authorized research drug in a controlled setting, with qualified preparation and follow-up psychotherapy. Required plans cover informed consent, privacy, drug handling and dosing, medical screening, emergency care, safety reporting, stopping rules, therapist standards, and participant complaints. The Institute must report progress when lawmakers request it and submit final results by the first November committee meeting after completion. The study’s legal framework expires July 1, 2032.
