More places for dental hygienists to work

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah lets dental hygienists work in hospitals without a dentist’s general supervision. The law also adds federally qualified health centers as public health settings. Hygienists employed by public health agencies can work at locations those agencies direct. Mobile dental programs qualify as public health settings when they employ a Utah-licensed dentist. Hospitals do not have to offer these services, and the law provides no new funding.
