Beginning May 6, 2026, the law limits where and how many designations can be made. Proposals can cover only state highways. Each highway segment can have only one special designation. Designated segments must be at least five miles apart. Only one highway designation may honor the same individual.
Beginning May 6, 2026, the law creates a clear process to request special names for state highways. A legislator submits the proposal to a highway designation review committee. The committee receives and reviews proposals. The committee is not a public body and does not follow the Open and Public Meetings Act.
Beginning May 6, 2026, the law sets who can be honored and how signs work. A person can be honored only for exceptional bravery or lasting service, must have strong Utah ties, and must have been deceased at least five years. A group may be honored if it has strong Utah ties. Signs must meet transportation department standards and are limited to two, one each direction. Sign costs are paid from the state General Fund or private donations handled under law and department policy.
