Compassionate care after pregnancy or infant loss

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah must set rules for compassionate care after pregnancy or infant loss at birthing facilities. Facilities must follow these rules to get or renew a license. Rules may cover grief counseling, support referrals, cooling devices, time with the infant, and procedures for losses anticipated before birth. They may also include photos, molds of hands and feet, keepsakes, or written materials when practical. Utah must also develop optional training for health care providers on supporting affected patients and families. Licensed professionals in emergency care, obstetrics and gynecology, or labor and delivery can count this training toward continuing medical education requirements.
