Stronger court tools for unsafe drinking water

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah’s drinking-water director has broader power to seek court orders for violations covered by compliance-order authority. This includes orders to stop violations. Courts can appoint a manager to carry out fixes when a supplier’s violation poses a serious public health risk. This requires that the supplier cannot or will not make fixes that meet drinking-water law. Courts can also require suppliers to give up system ownership when reasonably necessary for long-term compliance.
