Patients gain take-home options with counseling changes

Beginning May 6, 2026, designated Utah facilities can offer patients unused medicine at discharge for continued treatment. These include freestanding urgent care centers, general acute hospitals, critical access hospitals, and ambulatory surgery facilities. Eligible medicines are limited to topical antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, dilation medicines, and glaucoma drops or ointments provided during operating-room, emergency-department, or ambulatory surgery care. The medicine must have been administered to the patient and be needed for continued treatment. It must come from the facility's dispensing system during the visit or be ordered at least 24 hours ahead and held for that patient. Facilities must label take-home medicine under Utah pharmacy rules. For medicine used in operating rooms or emergency departments, facilities must explain proper use. The specific pharmacist counseling requirement does not apply to these transfers.
