More workplace freedom for Utah veterinarians

For agreements entered on or after May 6, 2026, the law bans and voids veterinarian non-competes that limit competing work. This ban does not apply when the veterinarian owns at least 5% of the other party's business. From that date, new agreements blocking veterinarians from seeking that party's clients, customers, or employees after leaving are also void. New clauses barring veterinarians from discussing their work experience are banned and void, while legitimate trade-secret protections remain allowed. Veterinarian non-competes entered on or after that date also cannot require disputes to be resolved outside Utah.

Workers recover costs for unenforceable agreements

Beginning May 6, 2026, workers gain a financial remedy when employers try to enforce certain unenforceable workplace agreements. It covers non-competes, nondisclosure clauses, and agreements restricting efforts to seek clients, customers, or employees. The employer must seek enforcement through arbitration or a civil lawsuit, and a court or arbitrator must find it unenforceable. The employer then owes the worker's arbitration costs, attorney fees, court costs, and actual damages. The law sets no fixed payment amount.
