Police tows generally stay within counties
Beginning May 6, 2026, police-ordered tows without consent generally must go to an impound yard in the starting county. This covers vehicles, vessels, and outboard motors, including tows ordered by law enforcement representatives or highway authorities. It excludes private tow requests that an officer merely helps with. Evidence may go to an impound yard chosen by law enforcement. A neighboring county's yard is allowed if it is closer than every in-county yard and the owner is told its location. Out-of-county tows are also allowed when no in-county yard is available. They are allowed when local carriers cannot respond within a reasonable time because of weather, road conditions, or tow volume. The law does not set towing fees.
State impound yards face fencing rules
Beginning May 6, 2026, the commission's rules must require fencing that blocks the view into state impound yards. This applies along any side facing a paved class A, B, or C road. Opaque chain-link fencing is allowed. The law does not set a household payment or benefit.
