Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah sets a rule for local police. By January 1, 2027, each local law enforcement agency must secure mobile device forensics in one of three ways. They must run their own service, share services by contract with another entity (not the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory), or qualify as a participating agency by staffing the Regional Lab with adequately trained personnel for at least 2,000 hours a year. Agencies can still use the Regional Lab to access self-serve equipment and to get advanced services when standard tools fail to reach evidence on a phone or tablet.
