Public workers get holy-day leave priority
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah state and local government employers must give high priority to personal-leave requests on state holy days. Approval is not guaranteed, and holy-day status alone does not make a day a paid legal holiday. Each state employee also gets one additional Personal Preference Day for a holy day or another chosen day, with scheduling governed by state rules. State holy days are Holi, Lunar New Year, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Eid al-Fitr, Passover, Vesak Day, Eid al-Adha, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Diwali, and Christmas.
Schools must prioritize holy-day breaks
Starting with the 2027–28 school year, Utah school districts, charter schools, and higher education institutions must prioritize holy-day breaks. When setting calendars, they must try to align breaks with Good Friday and other state holy days, to the extent possible. A break on every holy day is not guaranteed.
Good Friday brings four-hour state holiday leave
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah recognizes Good Friday, the Friday before Easter Sunday, as a legal holiday. State employees who receive paid holiday leave get four hours for Good Friday, rather than the standard eight hours. This does not create a general household payment.
