Utah leaders’ pay and benefits change

Beginning July 1, 2026, the governor’s salary equals the Utah Supreme Court chief justice’s salary plus legally required extra pay. The lieutenant governor, state auditor, and state treasurer each receive 90% of the governor’s salary; the attorney general receives 95%. The law lists benefits for all five officers: vehicles for official and personal use, health and dental insurance, and basic life insurance. It also includes workers’ compensation, required employer Social Security contributions, long-term disability insurance, and additional state-paid life insurance. The governor also receives housing, household and security staff, household expenses, and retirement benefits under state retirement law. The other four officers can choose an eligible state retirement plan or a deferred compensation plan run by the State Retirement Office. Retirement options include the Public Employees’ Contributory, Public Employees’ Noncontributory, and New Public Employees’ Tier II Contributory plans. Each office must pay for its officer’s additional life insurance from its existing budget. The law provides no new funding and does not state salary amounts or whether total spending rises or falls.
