Patients get more care from pharmacists

Utah pharmacists can start therapy, manage drug treatment, and help prevent disease through written agreements signed with practitioners. Each agreement needs at least one pharmacist and one practitioner. Beginning May 6, 2026, pharmacists can also prescribe state-designated drugs and devices, including vaccines and epinephrine. Prescribing is optional and must fit the pharmacist’s training and experience. This authority does not cover Schedule I, II, III, or IV controlled substances.

New checks for online cold medicine buyers

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah’s precursor-chemical retail rules include online personal-use orders delivered in person or picked up curbside. Covered retailers must make nearly all sales for personal use, measured by both number and volume. Utah must implement real-time tracking for covered nonprescription products, including pseudoephedrine, when a system is free to the state and retailers. Participating sellers must submit buyer and sale details before completing sales, including identification information and a signed statement of accuracy. Sellers must block sales flagged by the system, with logged overrides and rule-based exceptions for imminent bodily harm or system failure. Without an approved, implemented system, covered online sales are banned. Records are confidential but available to courts, state inspectors, and authorized law enforcement. Compliant retailers receive civil liability protections, except for gross negligence or willful misconduct, plus protection for certain system-caused data breaches.
