Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.

Centralized court processing for evictions and debts

Beginning January 1, 2027, Utah’s Judicial Council can create a division for eviction and debt-collection cases. If created, courts must transfer covered cases there for processing before and after judgment, overriding normal court-location rules. Covered cases include eviction actions and civil actions eligible for debt-collection filing on or after that date. The division may transfer cases to a proper court location for trials or evidence hearings outside the eviction-hearing process. The Council must provide enough resources, including commissioners or judicial assistants, from legislative funding; the law provides no new funding itself.

More nominees for open appeals court seats

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah expands nominee lists when the same appeals court has multiple vacancies at once. The Appellate Court Nominating Commission must send the governor five extra applicants for each additional vacancy. This broadens the governor’s choices without directly changing household taxes or benefits.
