Utah transportation leaders face new oversight rules

Utah Transportation Commission members appointed after May 6, 2026, serve four-year terms instead of six. Beginning May 6, 2026, the commission can appoint one commissioner to a voting or nonvoting transit board seat only in small districts, following Utah Code Section 17B-2a-807. From that date, it must review submitted transit district plans at least annually. It must also report annually to the Transportation and Infrastructure Appropriations Subcommittee on new transportation capacity projects, their funding levels or shortages, and unfunded highway construction and maintenance needs. The subcommittee reviews those reports and recommends added funding and a revenue source to the Legislature; the law provides no new funding.
