New crash reporting rules for drivers

Beginning July 1, 2025, you must contact law enforcement right away after a crash that causes injury or death, or leaves a vehicle too damaged to drive. You do not have to call for minor property-only fender‑benders; this replaces the old $1,000 damage rule. Call city police if inside a town or city; otherwise call the state highway patrol or county sheriff. The “undrivable vehicle” rule does not apply to bicycles or other human‑powered vehicles. Police who investigate these crashes must send a written report to the highway department within 10 days, even if the vehicle was moved.
