The Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources can survey and document all known petroglyphs and pictographs on state, school, and institutional land. It can make models and hire consultants to do the work. Surveys cannot enter private land unless the owner gives permission.
You cannot break, carve, mark, remove, or damage petroglyphs, pictographs, or historic inscriptions on state land without permission. Doing so is a misdemeanor. The penalty is a fine up to $750, jail up to 6 months, or both. Permission must come from the State Board of Land Commissioners.
