Antamina (Ancash Region, Peru; altitude ~4,300m; BHP 33.75%, Glencore 33.75%, Teck Resources 22.5%, Mitsubishi Corporation 10%) is one of the world's largest polymetallic mines — producing both copper and zinc concentrates, plus significant molybdenum and silver. Annual production approximately 370,000-420,000 tonnes copper equivalent. Antamina is a skarn deposit (copper-zinc mineralization where copper-rich and zinc-rich ore zones alternate, requiring separate concentrate streams). The mine is connected to the coast by a 302km dedicated slurry pipeline — concentrate is pumped as a slurry to the port of Punta Lobitos (near Huarmey) for shipment. The pipeline is one of the longest concentrate pipelines in the world. Antamina is considered one of the highest-quality large copper assets globally due to its polymetallic credits (zinc and molybdenum revenues offset copper cash costs), resulting in very low net copper production costs. BHP's Kwinana Nickel Refinery, located in Kwinana Industrial Area approximately 35km south of Perth, Western Australia, was the only large-scale battery-grade nickel sulfate refinery in the Western Allied sphere in the Asia-Pacific. Kwinana converted nickel matte from BHP's Kalgoorlie smelter into Class 1 nickel products including nickel sulfate for EV battery precursors. Capacity: approximately 100,000 tonnes of finished nickel per year. BHP announced an indefinite operational suspension of Nickel West (including Kwinana) on May 14, 2024, citing sustained low nickel prices driven by Indonesian HPAL competition making Australian sulfide operations structurally uneconomic. Approximately 3,000 jobs were affected. The Kwinana closure means no significant US-allied, Australian-origin battery-grade nickel sulfate refining capacity currently exists in the Pacific hemisphere. BHP's Olympic Dam mine (Roxby Downs, South Australia) is the world's largest known uranium deposit and a major copper/gold/silver producer. Olympic Dam operates in an arid region 560 km north of Adelaide, requiring an 18 km pipeline from the Gawler Craton to access the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) — the world's largest and deepest artesian groundwater basin, underlying ~22% of Australia (1.7 million km²). The GAB provides the only reliable water supply for the region; over-extraction has already reduced artesian pressure in many bores from free-flowing to requiring pumping. BHP's Olympic Dam mine in Roxby Downs, South Australia is among the world's most remarkable resource deposits: it contains the world's largest known uranium deposit (2.45 million tonnes U3O8), the world's fourth-largest copper deposit, and one of the world's largest gold deposits — all in the same ore body at the same location. BHP produces copper and gold from Olympic Dam as primary products; uranium is also produced but has been a commercial challenge due to uranium market price volatility. BHP's Escondida uses approximately 1,000 liters of water per tonne of ore processed — a figure that translates to roughly 380 billion liters per year across the mine's ~380 million tonne annual throughput. The mine has achieved ~75% water recycling, reducing fresh (desalinated seawater) input to ~95 billion liters/year. The energy required to pump this water 3,500 meters vertically to the mine makes Escondida one of Chile's largest single electricity consumers — more than the city of Antofagasta. This creates an unusual compound supply chain risk: Escondida's water supply depends on continuous electricity from Chile's Northern Interconnected System (SING), and Chile's SING increasingly depends on solar energy (the Atacama has the world's highest solar irradiance). A grid instability event in the SING — caused by intermittency, transmission failure, or political intervention — would simultaneously cut Escondida's water pumping and ore processing, halting ~5% of global copper supply. Water → electricity → copper: a three-link chain where each link is a potential chokepoint.

BHP was founded in 1885 as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd. in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia — named for the Broken Hill ore body (silver-lead-zinc) discovered in 1883. The Broken Hill orebody was the world's richest silver-lead mine in its era. BHP expanded to iron ore and coal in the early 20th century, becoming Australia's largest company. In 2001, BHP merged with Billiton (Anglo-Dutch mining company with origins in Dutch colonial tin mining in Billiton, Indonesia, 1860) to form BHP Billiton, then reverted to BHP in 2022 after the merger structure was simplified.
