DMEGC Magnetics was founded as part of Hengdian Group, a Chinese conglomerate established in 1975 in Hengdian Town, Dongyang, Zhejiang Province -- a town that had almost no industry in 1975 and by 2020 had become both the world's largest film production base (Hengdian World Studios, built from 1996) and a major industrial hub for magnets, electronic components, and batteries. The Hengdian conglomerate-building story is one of Chinese township industrial policy in action: local government and entrepreneur Xu Wenrong built a diversified industrial group by attracting investment and building infrastructure in what was previously agricultural land. DMEGC's NdFeB magnet production, which grew alongside China's electronics industry from the 1980s, became strategically significant when EV adoption created demand for high-performance magnets at automotive scale. Tesla's qualification of DMEGC as a direct magnet supplier -- confirmed by supply chain tracking -- means a subsidiary of the company that owns China's movie backlot is manufacturing components for American electric vehicles.
