Freudenberg's meltblown polypropylene nonwoven fabric — the filtration layer in automotive cabin air filters — is physically identical in fiber structure to the filtration layer in N95-equivalent FFP2 and FFP3 respirators. When COVID-19 created a global shortage of N95 respirator material in spring 2020, Freudenberg pivoted production lines that normally supply automotive OEM filters to produce respirator-grade meltblown media. The BMW cabin air filter production line and the pandemic PPE supply line share the same meltblown extruder and the same polypropylene resin feedstock. Freudenberg simultaneously supplies the automotive supply chain (cabin air filters for new vehicle production) and the healthcare PPE supply chain (respirator filter media) from a common production base. When automotive production falls (as during COVID shutdown of auto plants), freed meltblown capacity flows to respirator production; when automotive recovers, PPE capacity competes with cabin filter demand. The two supply chains — auto manufacturing and medical PPE — are linked by a single pool of polypropylene meltblown production capacity that Freudenberg and a small number of competitors control globally.

Freudenberg Group was founded in 1849 in Weinheim, Baden-Württemberg by Carl Johann Freudenberg as a leather trading company — in the same Rhineland industrial corridor that also produced BASF (also 1865, nearby Ludwigshafen) and Merck (1668, nearby Darmstadt). The leather business transitioned through the 20th century as the company discovered that leather-working machinery and expertise transferred to other materials processing. By the mid-20th century Freudenberg had pivoted from leather into seals, gaskets, filtration materials, and technical textiles — each sharing the material science and precision manufacturing expertise of the leather trade. The Freudenberg family has never taken the company public and has owned it for 175 years — one of Germany's oldest continuously family-owned businesses. Freudenberg Performance Materials, the filtration nonwovens subsidiary, was created as technical air filtration demand grew in the postwar industrial economy. Today a 19th-century German leather trading company's materials expertise is embedded in the HVAC systems of every modern hospital and in the N95 respirator supply chain that proved critical during the COVID-19 pandemic.
