  • Did you know2024

Novelis is simultaneously the world's largest supplier of aluminum can sheet (for Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and AB InBev beverage cans) AND the world's largest aluminum recycler (processing 70+ billion used beverage cans per year) AND a major automotive aluminum sheet supplier (BMW Series, Ford F-150, Jaguar Land Rover). The company processes the same physical aluminum through two complete lifecycle loops: it sells can sheet to can makers → cans are filled and sold → consumers drink the contents → cans are recycled → Novelis collects the scrap → melts and rolls new can sheet → sells to can makers again. Novelis sits at both ends of aluminum's most circular supply chain, supplying the new material and processing the recovered scrap from that same material. The same Indian-owned rolling mills that supply the aluminum for a new Coke can also receive the aluminum from the crushed Coke can after the consumer recycles it.

    Novelis Inc.
  • Origin2023

Novelis was created in January 2005 when Alcan Inc. (Canadian aluminum company) was required to divest its rolling operations as an antitrust condition of Alcan's acquisition of Pechiney (French aluminum). The divested rolling assets were packaged as Novelis — a name derived from "novel" and "alloys" — and sold as an independent company. Hindalco Industries (Aditya Birla Group, India) acquired Novelis in 2007 for $6 billion, making it the largest acquisition by an Indian company at that time and placing the world's largest flat-rolled aluminum manufacturer under Indian industrial ownership. The 2020 acquisition of Aleris Corporation ($2.8B) added aerospace and specialty aluminum capabilities. Novelis' Bay Minette, Alabama greenfield plant (announced 2022, commissioning H2 2026) will be the first fully integrated US aluminum rolling plant built from scratch in nearly 40 years — a statement of confidence that US manufacturing investment economics have shifted.
