Shell traces its origins to Marcus Samuel, a London antique shop owner who in the 1870s built a business collecting and selling decorative seashells to Victorian collectors — and named his company the "Shell" Transport and Trading Company after the seashells that started his trade. His sons later expanded into kerosene transport to Asia (the Suez Canal had just opened, enabling bulk liquid tanker routes), and in 1892 Marcus Samuel Jr. commissioned the first purpose-built bulk oil tanker (SS Murex) to ship Russian kerosene from Batum through the Suez Canal to Asia — circumventing the Standard Oil tank-car distribution monopoly. Shell Transport and Trading merged with Royal Dutch Petroleum (a Dutch company producing oil from Sumatra, Dutch East Indies) in 1907 to form Royal Dutch Shell — one of the largest corporate mergers of its era. The seashell logo that appears on Shell fuel stations worldwide is a direct reference to the Victorian shell-selling antique shop on Houndsditch Street in London that became the world's second-largest oil company.

Shell Chemical's isopropyl alcohol (IPA) production at Geismar, Louisiana and Pernis, Netherlands supplies three completely different demand streams that compete for the same industrial IPA supply: (1) pharmaceutical manufacturing (IPA as a process solvent for drug synthesis and tablet coating — used in production of aspirin, ibuprofen, and injectable drug formulations); (2) semiconductor wafer cleaning (ultra-high-purity IPA for removing particles and organic contamination between silicon wafer process steps — each silicon wafer undergoes multiple IPA cleans during fabrication); and (3) consumer and medical disinfection (isopropyl alcohol 70% for skin antiseptic, surface disinfection, and during COVID-19, the primary active ingredient in WHO-formulated hand sanitizer). During the COVID-19 pandemic (March-June 2020), hand sanitizer demand for IPA surged >1000% simultaneously with elevated demand for pharmaceutical and semiconductor IPA, creating a unified IPA shortage that simultaneously affected drug manufacturing, chip fabrication, and pandemic hygiene supply chains — because all three demand streams source from the same industrial IPA producers including Shell Geismar.
