TotalEnergies SE
French integrated energy and petrochemical company (NYSE: TTE, HQ Paris). TotalEnergies produces n-hexane at the Gonfreville (Normandy, France) and Antwerp (Belgium) refinery complexes. TotalEnergies' Petrochemicals division supplies European hexane markets for oilseed extraction (French/EU canola oil, sunflower oil crushing) and pharmaceutical solvent use. The Gonfreville refinery (Norman Refining, ~246,000 bpd) is one of France's largest. TotalEnergies' hexane is food-grade certified for EU markets where canola (rapeseed) and sunflower oil crushing uses hexane extraction extensively.

TotalEnergies holds a 20% stake in Yamal LNG (Novatek 50.1%, CNPC 20%, Silk Road Fund 9.9%, TotalEnergies 20%) — a Russian Arctic LNG project producing ~17.4 mtpa from the Yamal Peninsula. Yamal LNG continued operating after Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine because the project is structured as a French-law special purpose vehicle, technically insulating it from direct Russia sanctions. TotalEnergies' continued equity stake and management role in Yamal LNG drew sharp criticism from European governments and the European Parliament, while TotalEnergies argued its involvement was legally required and that unilateral exit would hand its stake to Chinese or Russian buyers without disrupting the project. Yamal LNG's ice-class tankers deliver Russian Arctic LNG to European regasification terminals (including Dunkerque in France) while TotalEnergies simultaneously calls for European gas diversification from Russia.
Euromaidan Press ↗Origin2023
TotalEnergies' predecessor Compagnie Française des Pétroles (CFP) was founded in 1924 by the French government as a direct response to WWI strategic lessons: France had been entirely dependent on British (Shell) and American (Standard Oil) petroleum supplies during WWI and recognized this as an unacceptable national security vulnerability. CFP was created by French government decree after WWI to secure French petroleum supply from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire — specifically from the Mosul oilfields (later Iraq), which France had been allocated by the San Remo Agreement (1920). CFP was founded with mandatory French state shareholding and French industrialist backing, becoming France's national oil champion for 60 years. After three mergers in 1999-2000 (Petrofina, Elf Aquitaine) and rebranding to TotalEnergies in 2021, the French state company founded to end France's oil dependency now calls itself an "energy company" and invests in wind, solar, and EV charging — a century-long transformation from oil-security instrument to diversified energy company.
