Did you know2025
Zhong Ke San Huan NdFeB magnets are in EV traction motors (clean transportation), direct-drive wind turbine generators (renewable energy), MRI scanner systems (healthcare diagnostics), and industrial servo motors (manufacturing automation) -- four industries with no obvious policy connection. The clean energy transition (EV and wind) and the healthcare sector and the industrial automation sector all depend on the same Chinese magnet manufacturer. China's April 2025 export licensing for NdFeB -- which Zhong Ke San Huan navigated by retaining licenses -- demonstrates that these four sectors can simultaneously face supply uncertainty from a single Chinese government administrative decision. EV OEMs, wind turbine manufacturers, hospital MRI procurement, and factory automation buyers do not share a common supply chain monitoring framework for NdFeB magnet supply, and none of them had public warning that the April 2025 licensing announcement was coming.
Financial Times ↗Origin2023
Zhong Ke San Huan is China's oldest industrialized NdFeB magnet producer -- founded through collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences (zhong ke = Chinese science/academy) and the Sanwei group. The Academy of Sciences connection gave Zhong Ke San Huan access to the foundational NdFeB research developed by Chinese scientists in the 1980s, drawing on work by Masato Sagawa (Japan) who first reported sintered NdFeB in 1984 and Chinese researchers who independently developed parallel processes. Zhong Ke San Huan was among the first companies to scale NdFeB from laboratory to industrial production in China, establishing the Ningbo region as China's magnet manufacturing center. In April 2025, when China imposed export licensing requirements on NdFeB magnets as part of its response to US technology restrictions, Zhong Ke San Huan was among the companies that retained export licenses -- directly contributing to its 2025 net profit jumping 660% YoY as constrained competitors lost market access while Zhong Ke San Huan maintained supply to Western customers.
