Beginning July 1, 2025, prenatal providers must take a blood sample at the first visit or within 10 days. If the first visit is at or after delivery, testing happens then. The sample must go to a department-approved lab. The lab must test for syphilis, rubella immunity, hepatitis B surface antigen, and hepatitis C antibody, with automatic HCV RNA if the antibody is reactive. If the attending person cannot draw blood, they must arrange a provider who can. Rubella immunity is not retested in later pregnancies if a prior positive result or a vaccination record exists.
Beginning July 1, 2025, providers must test pregnant patients for syphilis between the 28th and 32nd week. Providers must also test for syphilis at delivery. These tests help find infections close to birth so care can start right away.
Beginning July 1, 2025, providers and labs must report positive syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C results to the local health department. Reporting follows state communicable disease rules.
