Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 1 costs, 2 mixed.

Clear list of medicines CMAs can give

The law lists many medicines a certified medical assistant may prepare or give. These include vaccines; intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous shots; inhalers and unit-dose nebulizers; eye, skin, ear, nose, rectal, vaginal, and oral medicines; and some local anesthetics in limited forms. A provider must order the medicine. It must be in a single-dose ready package, or in a multi-dose package with a specific dose ordered and no dose math required.

Physician assistants can delegate to CMAs

A physician assistant working with a licensed doctor may delegate tasks to a certified medical assistant. Delegation must follow a written protocol or collaborative agreement with the physician. The Board of Physician Assistants can set rules, including on vaccines, for these delegations. Tasks that need the physician assistant’s own judgment to assess, plan, or change care cannot be delegated.

Certified MA credentials set; clinic training ends

To count as a certified medical assistant under this law, you must be certified by AMT, AAMA, NCCT, NHA, or NAHP. The law removes the rule that outpatient clinics must train and verify CMAs to give medicines. Employers may still choose to train staff, but this statute no longer requires it.
