Became Law

Summary

Terminates the Klamath Tribe Judgment Fund Act and directs remaining trust balances to the Klamath Tribe. This law repeals Public Law 89-224 and ends the statutory framework that governed the Klamath Tribe Judgment Fund. It requires the Secretary of the Interior, notwithstanding any prior distribution or use restrictions, to disburse as soon as practicable the balance of funds that were appropriated or deposited into the trust accounts for remaining legal fees, administration, and per capita trust accounts as identified by the Secretary. The Secretary will determine the amount and exact allocation of those remaining balances.

Klamath Tribe gets remaining judgment funds

The Interior Department pays the Klamath Tribe the remaining balances in the judgment fund trust accounts. These include money set aside for legal fees, administration, and per-person payments that existed on or before the law’s enactment. The Secretary must make the payment as soon as practicable and can do so even if the old rules said otherwise. The old Klamath Tribe Judgment Fund Act is repealed. The law does not list amounts; the Secretary identifies the exact funds.
