- People age 60 and adults age 40 or older with specified clinical risk factors or who identify as African, Hispanic/Latino, or Asian ancestry would become eligible for covered glaucoma screening across private plans, Medicare, and Medicaid beginning January 1, 2027. These screenings use the Social Security Act definition of a glaucoma screening.
- Uninsured and underinsured high‑risk individuals would gain access to free or low‑cost screenings and follow‑up through a new CDC Glaucoma Detection and Prevention grant program that prioritizes racial and ethnic minority and underserved communities. That program is authorized at $10.0 million for fiscal years 2027–2028.
- The bill adds a research grants program focused on glaucoma and optic nerve damage, including gene and stem cell approaches, and authorizes $10.0 million for fiscal years 2027–2028. It also requires Federal Employees Health Benefits plans to cover these screenings without cost sharing.
*Authorizes $20.0 million in discretionary grant and research funding for 2027–2028, which would increase federal spending if appropriated.*
