Federal protections for genetic data
If enacted, this bill would let federal cybersecurity officials treat systems that store, process, or send genomic sequences and other sensitive biometric data as critical infrastructure. It would require the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to plan and coordinate security for those systems, keep enough staff, and provide training for relevant federal personnel. The bill would also require CISA to consult and collaborate with biotechnology firms and other stakeholders, coordinate with the Office of Biometric Identity Management, and provide a secure channel for incident reports and technical help. These changes would take effect upon enactment.
